The Many Career Ideas I have Had Over the Years, And Why I Did Not Decide On Them.

Over the years I have had many different Career ideas that I have contemplated pursuing. However, I never can get past considering them. At the present time I work in a call centre. Of all the Careers I would select from this would most undoubtedly be at the bottom of the list. However as I’m somewhat technical and call centres have very high rates of staff coming and going, even throughout economic depression, it is fairly easy to get a job. The money is the main attraction, decent pay for a fairly easy job. I am going to talk about here the Career ideas I have at the moment, what I have had, and why I have not opted for any of them.

My major interest at school was Geography, followed closely by I.T. So when thinking about Careers, I had always considered something in any of these fields. Throughout my time at school, the Careers advisors were all jumping on the I.T. Bandwagon, this being the area where all the greatest New careers would be. I took both subjects at school, and at that time I contemplated pursuing careers in IT and keeping geography as more of an interest. However, after finishing school and doing both computing and geography at A level, I decided to follow my heart rather than my head, and began viewing Careers available to me with Geography qualifications.

This lead to me choosing a Geography and Environmental Management degree at Northumbria University. I still was not completely sure what Careers I wanted to pursue, but this course appeared to have a lot of New careers and Career ideas for me that I had not considered before. This was where I stumbled upon my first problem. I hated University. I left after a short 6 weeks. That more or less stopped me thinking about any more Geography related Careers.

Next I started looking at Careers in the IT industry, and I also contemplated becoming a teaching assistant. I ended up opting for the teaching assistant role, as the training to become a teaching assistant was free of charge, whereas the courses for more IT training all cost in excess of £3,000. Money I most undoubtedly did not have.

So I completed the teaching assistant course, but came across my next obstacle to that particular career route. I felt too immature to work with children, and, while I liked work experience I had at a local school, in the end I figured it may be for the best if I waited until I was more mature. So, I had to try thinking again.

I took up part time work to try and support going on an IT course and pursue the IT career again, but I encountered my next obstacle. Staying at home with parents and having a part-time job meant I appeared to have a lot of money, which I then went on to waste on going out, and purchasing pricey things I really did not need to buy. So I wound up working part-time for quite a some time. It wasn’t until I began to feel the urge to leave home, and start an independent life, I began thinking about Careers again.

I’m still not totally sure what I wish to do, but my career choice at the moment is allowing me to work from home, which works great for me. I’m a search engine optimisation consultant, and loving it. It may not be the most obvious choice ever, but it suits me fine.

My major problem with working from home is actually motivating myself to finish the work. However, it does of course mean that, once I get home from my boring job, I must then start doing work for my second job. This can sometimes lead to it being difficult to getting motivated, and it can seem like an effort to bring myself to start working again, when it feels like I ought to be chilling out and doing something entertaining with my time. My stimulus here is that I really dislike the day job, however, and normally this is enough to get me working and making sure I get sufficient work done so that I do not have to do much work on my days off.

However, sometimes I have a problem even when I am motivated, and it comes in the form of diversions from the internet. Now the work I do normally entails use of the internet, and sometimes I find it very hard to not just look at this video on Youtube, or just go and have a nosey at who is doing what on Facebook, or perhaps I will just log on MSN and see who is online right now… At times it is rather tough to stay focused on the job at hand, especially when you are in your own home, and it is a much more lenient environment anyway. My advice here is to try not to look at the diversions too much – set yourself little targets to stick to, and try and stick to them. It can be difficult, but it does help me sometimes. I would say however, if you have trouble disciplining yourself, working from home may not be a smart New career move for you.

Do not present important information in Flash movies or in images. Search engine robots can only read text on your source code so if you present important words in Flash movies and images rather than textual form, your search engine ranking will be affected dramatically.
